02 Jan 2009 Among GiantsThanks to the good relations of the Foto Video Zumstein AG in Berne, Switzerland I've got one of the coveted Canon EOS 5D Mark II cameras from the first delivery to Switzerland in December 2008. Just in time for my trip to Hawaii and California.

When I was taking pictures on Big Island, an American professional photographer immediately discovered my camera from 10 yards away and wanted to know exactly where I got it from. He was still waiting for his 5D MKII. As in Switzerland the first delivery to the United States has been sold out within a short time. He asked me whether I was pleased with the performance in low light. I'm even excited: In the dim light among the giant redwood trees in the Muir Woods National Monument the camera delivers an astonishing image quality.

Yes, there is noise at ISO 3200, but in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom it is easily controlled without losing too many details. Here is a 100%-crop. The size of the original RAW file is 30 MB.

This most famous and largest nature photography contest is organised by the Natural History Museum in London and the BBC Wildlife Magazine. My image of the the two young lions made it to the "Semi-Final" in the category "Animal Portraits". There were more than 32'000 entries (!) from over 3'000 photographers - more than ever before.
